Frequently Asked Questions About Science Classes in Katy/Memorial
Class Enrollment & Logistics
What age groups do science classes at Little Beakers Katy/Memorial accommodate?
Little Beakers Katy/Memorial serves children ages 3-16 across five program types. Preschool classes accept ages 3-5, elementary programs serve ages 6-12, and the advanced Molecular Level homeschool curriculum accommodates teens ages 13-16 with teacher approval. Each program features age-appropriate experiments and instruction methods.
Do I have to enroll at the start of the school year or semester and for the entire school year or semester?
No. Although we recommend attending classes for the entire school year to get the full benefit or our curriculum and maximize learning, we do offer flexible month-to-month registration where you may enroll at anytime. Note that we do not prorate nor refund the one-time annual registration/materials fee or tuition (except for the first month).
How do I enroll my child in science classes at Katy/Memorial location?
Choose the program type, and review available class times. Homeschool, after school and preschool programs require at least monthly registration, while Guided and Dissection sessions offer flexible pay per session scheduling options.
What are class sizes and student-to-instructor ratios at Katy/Memorial?
Class sizes vary by program type to ensure quality instruction. Preschool classes maintain small groups of 8 children, after-school programs and homeschool curriculum classes accommodate an approximate 10:1 student to teacher ratio. All classes are led by trained staff with assistant support for larger groups, ensuring every child receives hands-on participation and individual attention.
Can I visit the Katy/Memorial facility before enrolling my child in preschool, after school or homeschool programs?
Absolutely! Families are encouraged to experience The Woodlands lab through Open Lab sessions before committing to structured classes. Open Lab allows self-guided exploration of 30+ experiments, giving you and your child a chance to see the facilities and equipment.
Can I enroll my child programs at Little Beakers Katy/Memorial in which my child's age does not fall within the recommended age range?
Yes, absolutely! The recommended ages are a guide only. We have had many 10 y.o.+ students enroll in Elemental level in order to build a solid foundation in that level’s objectives. And likewise, we have had many younger students advance to a higher homeschool level because they have demonstrated a satisfactory understanding of the lower level’s course material and are ready for the next level. Little Beakers Katy/Memorial teachers and management will provide parents with a recommendation on what the optimal path forward is for their child.
Should I enroll my 5 y.o. in preschool or Elemental level homeschool classes at Little Beakers Katy/Memorial?
The recommended ages are a guide only but we have had many 5 y.o. students currently enrolled in preschool level who are ready and capable of being in a homeschool level class. The main differences being:
- The homeschool class is 20 minutes longer than the preschool class.
- Students begin to learn about and do more reporting every week in the Elemental level homeschool classes.
Little Beakers Katy/Memorial teachers and management will provide parents with a recommendation on what the optimal path forward is for their child.
Scheduling & Attendance

Homeschool, preschool, and after-school programs run approximately September through May in alignment with Houston ISD. Guided and Dissection session times are offered year-round with expanded times from June through August during summer break.
What happens if my child misses a scheduled class at Little Beakers Katy/Memorial?

Curriculum & Educational Approach
What makes Little Beakers Katy/Memorial different from other kids' science programs?
Little Beakers provides authentic laboratory experiences in a permanent Katy/Memorial facility, not mobile demonstrations or entertainment venues. Every child conducts their own experiments using professional equipment, lab coats, and safety glasses. The curriculum was developed by aerospace chemist Dr. Cinttya Morgan and covers 1,000+ unique experiments across chemistry, physics, biology, and more—far exceeding the scope of typical children’s science programs.
Do Katy/Memorial classes align with Texas education standards?
Yes, the curriculum aligns with Texas standards for science education. Homeschool programs provide complete transcripts documenting credit hours and topics covered. Teachers and homeschool families use these classes to supplement classroom learning, prepare for standardized tests, and fulfill hands-on laboratory requirements that traditional classrooms often cannot provide.
What scientific topics are covered in Katy/Memorial science classes?
The comprehensive curriculum spans chemistry (polymers, reactions, molecular structures), physics (forces, motion, energy), biology (cellular structures, ecosystems, anatomy), microbiology (bacteria, microscopy), and electrochemistry (circuits, conductivity). Each program level introduces age-appropriate concepts through hands-on experimentation rather than passive observation, building scientific literacy and critical thinking skills.
How do dissection classes benefit my child's education at Little Beakers Katy/Memorial?
Dissection classes develop observation skills, scientific methodology, and biological understanding that reading or videos cannot provide. Students learn anatomical structures, comparative biology, and proper scientific documentation. These experiences particularly benefit students interested in medicine, veterinary science, or biological research careers. Trained scientists guide each dissection with appropriate context and respect for the specimens.
My child has completed a full year of the Elemental level homeschool classes at Little Beakers Katy/Memorial. Does he now move up to Subatomic level?
It depends on his age, his level of knowledge and how many years he has been enrolled in the Elemental level. We have 3 years of curriculum for each of the levels within the homeschool program (Elemental, Subatomic, Molecular). If he has completed one year of Elemental classes and is 7 years old, we would likely recommend to continue with at least another year of Elemental before moving up to Subatomic level. However, we evaluate each student individually and will provide recommendations to parents on the optimal path forward.
Do Little Beakers Katy/Memorial students need to be fluent in reading or writing?
The focus of Little Beakers homeschool classes is not students’ level of reading and writing. The focus is hands-on experimentation and understanding the importance of the scientific method. Little Beakers staff will write new or difficult vocabulary on the board for all students to see and copy down, and students are encouraged to record what they see or expect to see, even by drawing.
